Description Steph Gosling 2009-01-24 22:25:54 UTC
Upgraded my system today from gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r4 to 2.6.28-r1 and at the same time vmware-workstation to 6.5.1.126130 (and it's deps). On running vmware the new automatic kernel module compiler/installer barfs trying to build vmmon, spitting the following error and the following log:

Unable to build kernel module.

See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-14331.log for details.

heroditus ~ # cat /tmp/vmware-root/setup-14331.log

Output When 'vmware' is run from an xterm (unprivileged, my user is in the vmware group) will be attached; that contains a python trace. The same error when run as root.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =app-emulation/vmware-workstation-6.5.1.126130!f!b!s
2. run vmware
3. profit ;)

Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-25 01:08:46 UTC
Hiya Steph,

Since you upgraded your kernel, did you remember to re-emerge vmware-modules? We don't support the automatic module compilation built in by vmware, since it then can't be handled by our package manager (and hence we can't provide security updates or relevant patches for any issues that may arise).

Please re-compile vmware-modules and then try running vmware again. Let me know if it all works then, or if you're still experiencing problems. Thanks... 5:)
Comment 3 Steph Gosling 2009-01-25 08:19:08 UTC
OK put it down to meatware error :) remerging vmware-modules did indeed solve the problem. Sorry for the bother Mike.
