Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-01-24 10:11:04 UTC
The attached patch makes cups-pdf default to ${HOME} instead of /var/spool for placing generated pdf files. Similar patches are being already applied by other distributions that package cups-pdf: ubuntu default to $HOME/PDF and fedora defaults to ~/Desktop

This is a trivial patch and I think that most users (including me) would prefer getting generated pdf files in homedir instead of /var/spool, that we rarely visit except for currently getting files generated by cups-pdf

Thanks

Reproducible: Always

Generally we try to not change the default behaviour of our packages and follow upstream as closely as possible on Gentoo, especially when there's an easily editable configuration file around. There was already an einfo in the ebuild which informed the users to have a look at the README. I've just changed it to use elog instead to catch more attention, thanks for reporting Pacho!

OK, anyway I have just mailled upstream suggesting this change :-)

This is the reply from upstream:

Hello Pacho,

thanks for your feedback. Since several distributions use different
output directories (you stated two of them already in your mail), there
is no value I could set this to that would fit all. So I prefer leaving
it set to a value that will work on a server in a larger network (as we
use in my working environment) where the print server does not even
mount the home directories.
For /var/spool I can be sure that it will be available on any UNIX
platform.
Distributions can easily alter the path to whatever they prefer.

Best wishes,
Volker

Then, well, seems that /var/spool can also be useful in some cases and "elog" would be enough

Best regards
