Description Michael Ihde 2003-07-29 22:27:37 UTC
When attempting an install on a Sony Vaio PCG-Z505JS the install process gives
the error:
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address c8ea62f8

I'm using the Sony PCMCIA CD-ROM drive, therefore the installer must be started
with: gentoo ide2=0x180,0x386.

The hwsetup completes and gives me a prompt, however the spinner just keeps on
going forever (across the screen, making input difficult to see), until I kill
the hwsetup process.

If I boot the installer with:
    gentoo ide2=0x180,0x386 nodetect
it will obviously work fine since hwsetup isn't running.

I've tried it with the USB floppy both attached and not attached, the same thing
happens. I've attached the dmesg output

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Aquire Sony VAIO Z505JS with PCMCIA CD-ROM
2. Boot the installer with gentoo ide2=0x180,0x386
3.

Actual Results:
The hwsetup task keeps running until it is forcebly killed.

Expected Results:
The hwsetup task should have terminated itself, and the a prompt should have
been displayed.

Is this on the 1.4release or 1.4-rc4?
Comment 3 Michael Ihde 2003-08-10 11:18:02 UTC
On 1.4-rc4. I'm going to test it with 1.4 once I get the CDs
Comment 4 Michael Ihde 2004-02-22 13:44:12 UTC
I'm terribly sorry for the late response. I just got the 1.4 CD's and the kernel oops still happens. Here is the brief output. The install was started with the option ide2=0x180,x0386 to get the pcmcia CDROM drive to work. The capital X's represent the blue progress blocks.

Thats a kernel bug, hopefully fixed by the newer kernels on the latest livecds. Please reopen if issue is still present.
Comment 6 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:24:20 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
