Description Bartosz Szreder 2009-01-15 22:32:59 UTC
Using gentoo-sources-2.6.28 and sys-fs/udev-135-r3, sound card drivers compiled into kernel (not alsa-drivers package and not loadable modules) for Intel AC'97 device, media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.18 --- does not create appriopriate entries in /dev.

The sound card is actually detected and working, as the device nodes can be created by hand and all of a sudden sound starts working flawlessly. Especially, using information from proc I could recreate all needed devices:

badb@Ty_Draniu ~ $ cat /proc/asound/devices
  0: [ 0] : control
  1: : sequencer
 16: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback
 20: [ 0- 4]: digital audio playback
 24: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture
 25: [ 0- 1]: digital audio capture
 26: [ 0- 2]: digital audio capture
 27: [ 0- 3]: digital audio capture
 33: : timer

Ty_Draniu ~ # mkdir /dev/snd; cd /dev/snd; mknod timer c 116 33; mknod controlC0 c 116 0; mknod pcmC0D0p c 116 16; mknod pcmC0D4p c 116 20; mknod pcmC0D0c c 116 24; mknod pcmC0D1c c 116 25; mknod pcmC0D2c c 116 26; mknod pcmC0D3c c 116 27; chown -R root:audio /dev/snd

Reproducing may be difficult, as it's the first time I've stumbled into something like that.

False alarm, turns out udev was for some reason turned off on that machine. Sorry for wasting time and bandwidth.
