Description Chris 2009-01-10 22:06:11 UTC
Did a fresh install of gentoo, stage3 on a dual amd64 box with 4 gigs of ram. This system has run gentoo and other linux OSs without incident. The installation went without a hitch. After installation, I did an emerge portage, then an emerge -uD world, which called for a recompile of gcc. Everytime it begins to compile, it crashes out about 15-20 minutes into the compile. The only change made to the stock make.conf was I added FEATURES="parallel-fetch" -- no other changes were made, and nothing is in /etc/portage -- so this is a stable install all the way. Oh yes, I installed vim and its dependencies without incident as well (only package installed at this point).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Do fresh, stage 3 install with 2008.0 CD for amd64
2.emerge --sync
3.emerge -u portage
4. emerge -uD world

Actual Results:
The error:

This line: "checking whether the C compiler works... configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs" is very strange, considering everything running on the system is "C compiled"...

Expected Results:
expected to compile without complaint.

Comment 2 Chris 2009-01-11 16:33:56 UTC
Not a bug... found the problem. Added IA32 to the kernel. I' not sure why, since I'm not asking to use any 32 bit apps on this system. I would have been happy with a pure 64 bit environment, but for some reason, gcc, glibc and sandbox all want this...
