Description Fabiano Francesconi 2009-01-08 20:25:57 UTC
When I run a game (uplink :D) suddently X crashes brutally without an error, nor writing a log. Furthermore it seems unable to restart itself.
The only thing to do is an hard reboot.

I can't think about a problem neither find a way to fix this (maybe in xorg.conf).

If I upgrade video-intel driver to any other unstable version (2.2.1, 2.3.2..) I get uplink working but the card seems becoming slower and slower (glxgears isn't a benchmarking tester but with the stable driver I get around 1500 fps, with 2.2.1 1500 fps (but it gives me a lot of error and the gears aren't rotating), with 2.3.1 500 fps (same issues) and so on..

This isn't about uplink, it did happen also with another physic game (of which I can't remember the name)

I think there's something wrong with OpenGL (?). Don't know..

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Bootup computer
2. Start uplink
3. xorg-server crashes. Kaboom!

Expected Results:
Uplink shows? :P

See xorg.conf and log attached and.. I don't know what else might be helpful

This might come as a disappointment, but the only way out of this is to upgrade your whole X stack to ~x86. Older Intel drivers have numerous issues on newer hardware (such as yours), but only updating the driver to ~x86 will bring even more bugs.

As for fixing xorg-server 1.3, that won't happen, it's just too old and too hard to work with.

Thanks for understanding

Yea I get it.
This might be "off topic" but if I upgrade to ~x86 (xorg-server-1.5.3, xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1) I can almost reach 60 fps on glxgears.

The game starts, of course, but even at 640x480 it's unusable (and we are talking about a game that is text based).

Have I to fill another bug ticket for that version of drivers?
Moreover with ~x86, xorg-server crashes if I don't force it to use XAA acceleration instead of the default one (EXA?!).

I really don't know what to do. Hints?
Thanks

You can see a candidate stable list in bug 251832 . If you still have problems with newer X and intel driver, maybe you should open a separate bug report for the problem. If you want also check more, you could also try with 2.6.2 intel driver version if 2.6.1 still doesn't work (it's still hardmasked for testing) and, if still failling, maybe a sending a bug to upstream (bugs.freedesktop.org) would be useful

Good luck!

xorg-server 1.5.3 and xf86-video-intel 2.6.3 have both been stable for a while, let's consider this bug fixed.

If this is not the case, please don't hesitate to reopen this bug or to open another one if the issue is different.

Thanks
