i am running app-office/lyx-1.6.1 on a new (< 1 month old) gentoo installation. after opening lyx, when i try to view or export any lyx document using pdflatex (via View --> PDF (pdflatex) or File --> Export --> PDF (pdflatex)), the view/export fails. the view fails with the message "File does not exist: /tmp/.private/nisavid/lyx_tmpdir.MT4132/lyx_tmpbuf0/<file>.pdf" (where <file> is the name of the lyx file sans ".lyx"), whereas the export fails silently. however, if i similarly view or export the file with ps2pdf, the operation is successful. not only this, but subsequent attempts to view or export with pdflatex also succeed. after emerging dev-texlive/texlive-fontsextra, these issues are fixed. prior to fixing this, i discovered that ligatures, quotation marks, and many other characters were not being produced correctly in the pdf, ps, and dvi files exported by lyx. this issue is also fixed if texlive-fontsextra is present.
