Tracking a conversation & doc regarding website redesign

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Matt Summers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-08 18:39:01 UTC
So, to progress I think we should use the comments to chat about ideas, etc. We can create a doc (using restructured text if markup is needed) & attach it to this bug. That way its small & we can version it somewhat.

Cheers

What happened to the old website redesign contest winner?
Comment 3 Nick Cunningham 2009-01-08 19:21:17 UTC
Glad to finally see some more movement on the long awaited website redesign.
Ive just done some searching to help anyone (including myself) who missed what i think was the last redesign effort back in 2005/2006.

CVS contents of http://wwwredesign.gentoo.org - http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-projects/www-redesign/htdocs/

Old wwwredesign mailing archive - http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.www-redesign/

I think we need a new contest. We also need to decide on a better way of picking new design than a poll on forums where 0,000001% of community voted on a design which proved to be unimplementable for over 3 years...

For fans of Git, the redesign work that was done & referenced above is now available on github here:
http://github.com/alistair/gentoo-unofficial-wwwredesign/tree/master

I have a private fork, where I have made some minor, but (to me) important css changes. Those changes are available at the following pastebin locations:

home.css http://pastebin.com/m11491d56
main.css http://pastebin.com/m6eef3530

github might be a nice place to continue the work, as its free and makes forking/merging fairly easy.

Matt, you realize that the Gentoo infra does run a git setup, right?

Well yes, I was aware of that. Guess I'll send the request/template to infra. Thanks for the reminder.

Xavier,

I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts about this, positive or negative. Thanks!

I am going to make the request to infra for a git repo on overlays.

So, who wants in, as in committers?

Also, if everyone likes, I will call it proj/redub3

TBH, I am quite tired with all those Gentoo Website Redesigns.
FYI, when the redesign contest failed (a bit before actually as I knew where it was going), I spent 2 weeks doing my own redesign.
I had absolutely no prior experience, had never even coded a simple hml page and I came up with gentoo.neysx.org
It was not and is not meant to replace www.gentoo.org
I learned 2 things:
1. Anyone can do 90% of the job
2. The last 10% suck

Nichoj gave it a go and came up with gentest.neysx.org
I host it and I have kept it up-to-date as far as xsl features on www.gentoo.org are concerned.
gentest.neysx.org might be easier to restyle.
I might even edit the XSL of gentest.neysx.org to allow the same kind of skin choosing as on gentoo.neysx.org if anyone provide a patch for the html
BTW, I use a simple list of skins in an XML file:
http://gentoo.neysx.org/styles.xml?passthru=1

Still interested to yet again redesign www.gentoo.org? Go ahead,
do it,
get it approved,
get it hosted,
be ready to maintain it.

As this bug got opened after I have shown interest in the project, an interest which I now do no longer have, we can just as well close it, right?
