Description Andreas Fischer 2009-01-07 19:27:25 UTC
The latest Glest ebuild refuses to build with xerces-c-3 and above. This results in a blocking upgrade with games-puzzle/enigma-1.01, which requires version 3 or higher.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =games-puzzle/enigma-1.01 with USE="nls"
2. emerge =games-strategy/glest-3.1.2
3. Observe failure

Actual Results:
Quoting:
"
!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:
(...)
dev-libs/xerces-c:0

('ebuild', '/', 'dev-libs/xerces-c-3.0.0-r1', 'merge') pulled in by
    >=dev-libs/xerces-c-3 required by ('installed', '/', 'games-puzzle/enigma-1.01', 'nomerge')

('installed', '/', 'dev-libs/xerces-c-2.8.0-r1', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    <dev-libs/xerces-c-3 required by ('installed', '/', 'games-strategy/glest-3.1.2', 'nomerge')
"

Expected Results:
Both games should install without problems

Output of emerge --info:

Yes, you'll have to pick one game or the other.
Comment 2 Mark Loeser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-08 15:45:51 UTC
That's not going to work when I pull <dev-libs/xerces-c-3 from the tree. Anything older than 3.0 has a security vulnerability, so they are going to go away.
Comment 3 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-08 16:52:52 UTC
That's a different issue. There's no "bug" here.
Comment 4 Andreas Fischer 2009-01-08 21:06:52 UTC
So - should I report this upstream then? Or how do I proceed? I don't even know the cause for the glest ebuild to require <xerces-c-3 - there is neither a comment in the ebuild nor a respective instruction on the glest website.
Comment 5 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-08 21:40:20 UTC
If it's essential for you to run glest, you're stuck with the old version of xerces-c. I imagine though that you'll probably prioritize the rest of your system and choose to uninstall glest.

The cause is that the API changed between xerces-c-2 and xerces-c-3.
So, the glest devs should port glest to use the new API.
