this check is wrong if you have gnome && kde set kde? ( !gnome? ( kde-base/kdelibs:3.5 ) ) if kde is set, kdelibs should be asked, or at least qt3 check performed.
In case that helps anybody, I was able to compile celestia the old fashion way. Doing that allowed me to find two things that might help fix the problem: 1. configure would not complete until I emerged x11-libs/gtkglext 2. I had to use option '--with-gnome' on configure I know nothing of Portage, but it seems the celestia ebuild is missing a dependency on gtkglext.
