Description aidar 2009-01-05 21:33:49 UTC
Firefox 3.0.5 crashes immediately after launching it.

X86_64 multilib with ~amd64 keyword.

It is stable enough for me to run my virtualbox so, as host OS I am more than satisfied, even with this keyword.

I attached my emerge --info as a text file. I have been following all the bugs on the bugs.gentoo.org concerning the FF, xulrunner 1.9.0.5 and it doesn't help - it just keeps crashing. It doesn't matter with the glibc-2.9_p20081201-r1 or glibc-2.9_p20081201 - SAME result. The FF just crashes. The Epiphany does the same, after a while.

The thing is, I had this issue, then I saw on the bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234646 that it needs openoffice to go stable, ok, was installing it - it indeed went stable.

It was working, I was very satisfied, until I issued emerge -uDNv world, and now, I haven't slept for two days trying really everything to run this FF.

Please, help.

the same thing happens with Firefox 3.1 beta 2 emerged with beta 2 of xulrunner.

What am I doing wrong, totally ?
Comment 4 Andre 2009-01-06 11:47:07 UTC
I have a simillar problem with Firefox 3.0.5 crashing with an "Illegal instruction" error.
Also make "emerge -e world" two times without success.

I believe the problem is with the -msse4 in the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS. As your machine and my machine that have the issue have this flag. I also have an almost identical machine that don't show the problem and (maybe coincidence) don't have this flag.

I am doing an "emerge -e system" and "emerge -e world" again without this flag to see if this is the problem. I already tried emerge xulrunner and mozilla-firefox without this flag.

I change my CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS from:

#CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -mssse3 -msse4 -fomit-frame-pointer"
#CXXFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -mssse3 -msse4 -fomit-frame-pointer"

to:
CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

And made an "emerge -e system" then "emerge -e world".

The problem gone. I can start firefox and use it.

Andre

As per Andre said, removing -msse4 from CFLAG and CXX resolves the issue completely.

Thank you Andre, very much!
