Avahi support does not work at all in xvnc-0.9.3 (the current stable) unless the "system-libvncserver" is also set. It does work in 0.9.6, but the semantics are changed: without the "system-libvncserver", x11vnc runs avahi-discover; with it, it links directly and calls it natively,

That it executes and externel avahi helper should only happen when it fails to find the avahi libraries and build time. please provide a build log and config.log.

Ah, ok, it looks like the built-in avahi support requires USE="threads"
It now prints a warning, when non-native avahi support has been enabled.
