I have enabled the HPN patch by placing USE="hpn" in /etc/portage/env/net-misc/openssh, with the following results: >>> Unpacking source... >>> Unpacking openssh-5.1p1.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/net-misc/openssh-5.1_p1-r2/work * Applying openssh-4.7_p1-GSSAPI-dns.patch ... [ ok ] * Cannot find $EPATCH_SOURCE! Value for $EPATCH_SOURCE is: * * /var/tmp/portage/net-misc/openssh-5.1_p1-r2/distdir/openssh-5.1p1-hpn13v5.diff.gz * ( openssh-5.1p1-hpn13v5.diff.gz ) The file in question is neither in /var/tmp/portage/net-misc/openssh-5.1_p1-r2/distdir nor in /usr/portage/distfiles. Manually downloading the file into /usr/portage/distfiles and symlinking into /var/tmp/portage/net-misc/openssh-5.1_p1-r2/distdir was not sufficient to fix. Reproducible: Always

Strange, the patch downloads an applies flawlessly for me. Please post the output of `emerge -vf openssh`.
(In reply to comment #0) > I have enabled the HPN patch by placing USE="hpn" in > /etc/portage/env/net-misc/openssh, That's not going to work, use /etc/portage/package.use for USE flags.
