Description Plero H 2008-12-29 12:00:58 UTC
uvesafb module cannot load.

cat /etc/modules.d/uvesafb
options uvesafb mode_option=1280x1024 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap

dmesg | grep uvesa
uvesafb: Unknown parameter `mode'

I have re-emeged v86d and klibc but to no avail.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r7
2. build it with uvesafb as a module
3. load module

Actual Results:
module cannot load

Expected Results:
module should have loaded

googling around I found that in 2.6.27 mode=1280x1024 argument is used when uvesafb is built in the kernel and mode_option=1280x1024 when uvesafb is compiled as a module. I tried both but they fail with: "uvesafb: Unknown parameter `mode' "

Comment 1 Christian Ruppert (idl0r) gentoo-dev 2008-12-29 14:47:00 UTC
does this work for you?
video=uvesafb:1280x1024-32,mtrr:3,ywrap
Comment 2 Michal Januszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-29 15:00:39 UTC
It looks like the 'mode' option is still being used instead of (the correct) 'mode_option'. Try loading uvesafb manually: modprobe uvesafb mode_option=1280x1024 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap.
Comment 3 Plero H 2008-12-29 23:47:05 UTC
I tried loading uvesafb manually: modprobe uvesafb mode_option=1280x1024 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap
but it failed.

@ idl0r I appended: video=uvesafb:1280x1024-32,mtrr:3,ywrap
to kernel arguments but it didn't work either.

I want to load uvesafb at boot time and set correct resolution for my monitor
and since it requires v86d(not in genkernel yet) I compiled it as a module and load it when system boots.
I don't use bootsplash or fbsplash.

Also modinfo uvesafb:

I forgot to mention that in gentoo-sources-2.6.26-* I can load uvesafb module and it works flawlessly.

Did you get the same 'module cannot load' error message when you tried this? Have you checked the kernel log to see if there are any error messages there?
Comment 6 Plero H 2008-12-30 16:43:22 UTC
modprobe uvesafb mode_option=1280x1024 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap
FATAL: Error inserting uvesafb (/lib/modules/2.6.27-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/video/uvesafb.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

dmesg:
uvesafb: Unknown parameter `mode'

Yes, it's the same error
Comment 7 Michal Januszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-01 22:25:27 UTC
I ran some checks, and it looks like you have forgotten to run 'update-modules' after modifying /etc/modprobe.d/uvesafb. To confirm, run `update-modules` or try inserting the uvesafb module using `insmod` instead of `modprobe`.

Please re-open the bug in case that doesn't fix the problem.
Comment 8 Plero H 2009-01-01 23:10:56 UTC
I had already run 'update-modules' prior to reporting, but for some reason didn't work.
After your suggestion I run 'update-modules -f' and it works fine now.

Thanks
