Description subs 2008-12-20 17:03:42 UTC
I am using 2.6.27-r7 kernel on AMD64. If I update the nvidia drivers to any version >=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-177.80, the system will boot and log into Gnome just fine, but when I logout the machine hard locks, no terminal response at all and must be hard shutdown. If I just restart GDM the same happens so I would guess it is an issue with restarting X. I have a 7950GT. This behavior does not occur with x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.15.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Update nvidia driver
2. Logout
3. Freeze

I should mention I have an x86 box with a 7300 GT and the >=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-177.80 do not cause any problems there with the same kernel version. Also, the 177.80 drivers cause the same problem on my AMD64 with 2.6.26 kernels as well.

There is nothing gentoo can do about this issue. You should file a bug with nvidia as it is hardware specific.
Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-23 06:36:55 UTC
Please attach the relevant Xorg.?.log to this bug report.
Comment 4 subs 2008-12-23 06:41:41 UTC
I can post the Xorg log after the crash, but there is nothing in there, there is no output to the terminal or in the log, it just completely hard freezes. The terminal is unresponsive remotely and the machine must be hard reset.
Comment 5 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-23 16:02:04 UTC
Please use nvidia-bug-report.sh from a virtual terminal while X is running and if possible after the error occurs. If it's not possible, save your X log after the issue (i.e. don't immediately overwrite it) and attach the info here and send this to linux-bugs@nvidia.com
