Description Jonathan Kaufman 2003-07-22 06:11:32 UTC
When I enable HIGHMEM I/O (CONFIG_HIGHIO=y) in gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5 the
kernel produced will not boot. I have two MP machines (each with 2gb RAM) in
which this problem surfaces. I have also tried enabling HIGHMEM I/O using
gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r3 with no success. Vanillia-sources (2.4.21) works no
problems. Also related, is that enabling HIGHMEN (CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y) causes my
reiserfs module to complain (and not load) of unresolved symbols (relating to
highmemory). If I do *NOT* enable highmem I/O the kernel will boot. I have
tried using a monolithic kernel (with all modules directory compiled in), which
also doesn't boot. This problem occurs on two MP machines. I have tried
emerging new sources and cleaning up the modules as described in bug #21742.
The IDE controller used *is* the VIA controller, which is compiled into the
kernel (which is why I didn't try to add to bug #21742). The hardware on
machine #1 is:
Dual Tualatin 1.26ghz 512KB Cache
Aopen DX34R-U Motherboard (BIOS set to MPS Rev 1.4)
4 PC100 512mb ECC SDRAM (2gb Total)
Using Netgear NIC (Tulip Chip)
3ware 6800 8-port RAID Controller
1 IDE boot disk
1 IDE floppy
1 IDE DVD-ROM

Machine #2 is:
Dual Pentium III 733mhz
Supermicro P3TDDE motherboard (BIOS set to MPS Revision 1.4)
2 1gb PC100 ECC Registered SDRAM (2gb Total)
Using Onboard LAN (Intel)
3ware 6800 Raid Controller
NCR SCSI controller
SCSI DVD-ROM
IDE FLoppy
IDE boot disk

All system packages are current as of 7/20/03

Reproducable: Always.
Steps to reproduce:
Enable Highmem (4gb)
Enable HIGHMEM I/O
Compile
Boot

Actual Results.
Kernel doesn't boot. Grub will boot into kernel, last message on screen
is "uncompressing kernel, please wait" and then...Nothing. Have waited over 1
hour to see if kernel boots...It doesn't.

Expected results:
Kernel should boot and I see my 2gb of RAM.

Here is my .config (gentoo 2.4.20-r5)

There are my compile flages from make.conf
CFLAGS="-O3 -mcpu=pentium3 -march=pentium3 -fforce-addr -fomit-frame-pointer -
funroll-loops -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -falign-functions=4"

(BTW, still doesn't work if I use basic values of -march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe in
make.conf either)
Comment 1 Jay Pfeifer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-07-24 12:38:36 UTC
if reiser is complaining about unresolved symbols it is because you have switched higmem
on/off without properly cleaning the tree. Try 'make mrproper' or 'make distclean' or just wipe
the tree and re-emerge.

If you are using ataraid, and want highmem, you cannot use this kernel see bug 23224 for
more info.

Also, are you familiar with the 'Create a New Attachment' function? Pasting contents of files as
large as this into the text of the bug is hard to work with.

Jay
Comment 2 Jonathan Kaufman 2003-08-05 07:30:10 UTC
I apologize for not using the Attachment feature, I modeled my bug entry after a different one in which they *had* posted their kernel config etc. So the bad behavior just spread :)

Anyway, while it would seem that this has been closed, I thought I should still seek to clarify a few things. I *have* tried wiping out the kernel (/usr/src/linux) and remerging it in, and then doing a make dep && make clean && make bzImage modules modules_install. Which still produces a kernel which will not boot when using both Highmem and HIGHMEN I/O enabled. If I only have HIGHMEM enabled, it will boot but reiserfs will still complain about unresolved symbols. Also by ataraid do you mean the ataraid device (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_ATARAID), or all ATA raid cards like the 3ware ATA raid (which compiles under the SCSI device tree)? Is there likely to be support for HIGHMEN and ATARAID cards (3ware etc)? Thanks.
Comment 3 Jay Pfeifer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-05 08:20:41 UTC
looking @ this further
Comment 4 Jay Pfeifer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-05 08:25:49 UTC
i use both highmem & highmem i/o on gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r5 with 3ware cards @ at least 2
different places. I do not see the unresolved symbols you are seeing and all works well.

Can you try your .config against pfeifer-sources-2.4.21_pre4? Maybe like this:

emerge sync
emerge pfeifer-sources (if you want aavm add it your make.conf or export it)
cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-pfeifer_pre4/
cp foo/bar/.config . (where foo/bar is the location of your .config)
make oldconfig
make menuconfig (just to check your options are correct)
make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make modules modules_install
cd arch/i386/boot
mount /boot (if needed)
cp -a bzImage /boot
(run lilo if needed)
reboot (ie. init 6)

Thanks,

Jay
Comment 5 Jonathan Kaufman 2003-08-06 05:08:35 UTC
Well the results seem (at the moment) to be mixed. I updated to latest portage builds for system on Machine #2, and then compiled pfeifer-sources with Highmem enabled and HIGHMEM I/O. Following the directions as outlined *does* produce a kernel that will not only boot, but will not produce symbol errors with reiserfs....however it doesn't seem to be stable. At some point in the night (between 16:00 and 6:30am) the machine locked up. No messages on the console, nothing in /var/log/messages. I will see about loading up the pfeifer sources on Machine #1 and see if that one experiences a problem. I have included the package list (pkglist) for Machine #2, if you need/want any other information...just ask.

Comment 8 Jonathan Kaufman 2003-08-06 06:07:31 UTC
Yep. I just got the kernel compiled and booted for Machine #1. And it took about 4-5 minutes before the machine became unusable and locked up. So it would seem to be a mixed bag at the moment. pfiefer sources do seem be a step in the right direction for me, but not quite there however.
Comment 9 Jonathan Kaufman 2003-08-07 06:41:33 UTC
I disabled HIGHMEM I/O and rebuilt the kernel (using basically the same directions as stated in this Bug report). After rebooting, the machine sees all 2gb of ram, reiserfs module works fine. The system also seems to be stable. Based on that I would say something with highmem I/O is not ok with my systems. Is there any information that would be usefull to figure out why HIGHMEM I/O seems to be broken on these two machines?

Don't know if anyone will see this. But I have FINALLY figured it out.
On Two (of three) similiar machines (Dual P3 tualatin capable boards) I have gotten HIGHMEM and HIGHMEM I/O working in SMP mode. The trick seemed to be two fold;
   1. Disable ACPI in the BIOS (If available)
   2. add acpi=off to the kernel boot options to disable ACPI entirely in the kernel.

With this I was able to boot with HIGHMEM and HIGHMEM I/O enabled. I'm very pleased to have found this, the lack of 893mb+(?) memory was very very anoying. Thanks for all the hard work on Gentoo, as I do appreciate it (I bought the 1.4 Release CD and it's the only linux I run at home now)
