if dbus isn't loaded kdm won't come all the way up. when kdm is the value for DISPLAYMANAGER /etc/init.d/xdm should depend on /etc/init.d/dbus symptom is kdm starts the mouse shows up and then you're dropped back to the console. a check of processes will show kdm still running, gdm and X in general otherwise will work fine. Reproducible: Always
confirmed. the log messages are like this: 2008-12-10 00:46:45 +01:00; nyx; daemon.err; kdm: :0[21297]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter 2008-12-10 00:46:45 +01:00; nyx; daemon.err; kdm: :0[21297]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 125, signal 0
If you have D-Bus in the same init run level that xdm is in, D-Bus will start first. The key requirement is adding D-Bus into the same run level as described by D-Bus when you install it. However yes, if the KDE team did submit a patch to make xinit's xdm script to make this happen for kdm. I'd accept it and commit it.
since xdm init script requires hald which pulls dbus, there is no possible way of this still being open. Anyway feel free to reopen if you disagree.
