xf86-video-radeonhd-1.2.3 crashes Xorg when DPMS powers off the screen. See URL.
This was fixed long ago in upstream git repo.

Subject: BIOSScratch: Treat DAC SENSED_NONE as CRTC output.

The BIOS scratch bit that gets set when no DAC load has been detected
is will default to CRTC to avoid having the condition that no output
type is set.

Unfortunately the patch does not fix the problem completely: I am still seeing crashes when the screen is turned off to save power. The bug is fixed in git master branch however, so I suggest to put a snapshot from git in portage. It's working fine here.

I think you should change Severity from "critical" to "enhancement".

Anyway, me too would like to see radeonhd 1.2.4 in the tree.
