Comment 2 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-02 21:35:12 UTC
Looks like failing hardware.
Please tell us what type of IDE controller hda and hdb are attached to (post the lspci output and point out what controller has hda).
(It appears to be a CDROM drive.)
Please post the output of `hdparm -I /dev/hd{a,b}' too.

Please leave me CC-ed to this bug, I saw the same errors in my log some time ago and I'm interested what the resolution is.
Comment 7 Panagiotis Christopoulos (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-10 13:58:29 UTC
Maybe if you can paste your kernel's config, in attachment this time, it would be helpful. Assigned to kernel team. It seems to me misconfiguration or problematic hardware?

Your hda drives supports S.M.A.R.T.
You might want to use smartctl (sys-apps/smartmontools) to check,
if your drive is faulty.

Furthermore I would suggest having a backup ...
Comment 9 Axel Dyks 2008-12-10 15:44:36 UTC
... and check, if it's the right IDE cable and that it is seated properly.
--> http://www.tux.org/lkml/#s13-3

BTW, it seems that you've disabled automatic filesystem checks

EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended

and you are (already) mounting filesystems with errors

EXT3-fs warning: mounting fs with errors, running e2fsck is recommended
Comment 10 Axel Dyks 2008-12-19 21:04:23 UTC
Any news?

Did you check your cables, your disks (smartctl), your filesystems?
Comment 11 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-24 18:13:37 UTC
Agreed, looks like a potentially failing disk. I would suggest looking at the SMART logs. Also, you're using the old IDE subsystem, it is probably worth switching to libata (the disks will then be called /dev/sd*).

Please reopen when you've had a chance to provide the above info.
Comment 12 lexx 2008-12-25 15:41:53 UTC
I've checked cabels and so on.
Also found http://www.plug.org/pipermail/plug/2003-April/000533.html
and

and made "hdparm -Xudma2 /dev/hda" on boot.
Now everything is ok.

Your hard disk is reporting that it has encountered 50613 errors. If setting udma2 avoids the problem, then it indicates a buggy hard disk firmware, or possibly just that the slower speed obscures the bug for some reason. Anyway, given the huge number of errors reported, I don't think we can trust this disk to be in good health at all, so the errors are not really surprising.
