Not sure what exactly was the problem, but I just tried emerging docbook-xsl-stylesheets-1.74.0 again and this time it worked. Is it possible that the error was due to old versions of any of the following programs? dev-java/xalan-serializer-2.7.1 dev-lang/nasm-2.04 sys-apps/ed-1.0 dev-java/xalan-2.7.1 Those were packages that had a newer version available but never got updated by an emerge -avuDN world but only by a emerge -ave world.
