OK, got it : when I wanted to upgrade eric, it told me about qt4 for qscintilla-python which in turned told about qt4 too for qscintilla. And then, with qt4 in my USE flags, it does well. From 2.3.2 qscintilla-python seems to be qt4 only.

I set "qt4" and it built, but required pulling in QT4 stuff that I would prefer to not have at this point.
This may be related to the version of sip. I found a couple interesting bugs that seem to be related to the problem: "sip: QApplication has ctors with the same Python signature" http://www.nabble.com/Build-error-with-pyqt-py2Y-3.14.7-3,-Y%3D4,5,6-td20447703.html http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.general/27489 I will try to downgrade sip and see if that has an effect.
Okay, the version of dev-python/sip seems to be the key. Here's what I did: - added >=dev-python/sip-4.7.8 to /etc/portage/package.mask - removed the "qt4" USE flag - emerge -auvDN world After it completed successfully: - emerge -av1 PyQt qscintilla-python [just to make sure they could build successfully] - revdep-rebuild -p [nothing found] - emerge --depclean [to clean out unwanted QT4 stuff]
Moving sip to 4.7.7 fixed this bug for me. Blessed be! Pappy
Good job tracking down the issue guys. What I'm going to do is mask dev-python/qscintilla-python-2.3.2 for the time being until a Python and/or Qt dev can look into the issue. Basically, this should keep everything at status quo.

I should have added... perhaps it would be better to create a bug to mask sip >= 4.7.8 until it's known that PyQt and qscintilla-python will build against the newest version of sip. I'd prefer someone (far more) knowledgeable than I about Python and these interactions to do this.

Dev-python/qscintilla-python-2.3 refuses to build against x11-libs/qscintilla-2.3.2. If you mask qscintilla-python-2.3.2, you should mask qscintilla-2.3.2 too, because the versions should be the same.
Fixed by bumping PyQt to 3.17.6.
