Experimental Live CD Hangs on boot at PCI and USB hotplugging on a GigaBtye KT400A motherboard. Version used: livecd-2.4.21-kde-gnome-distcc-07-15- 2003.iso Steps taken to try to overcome this bug: 1) Diable PCI and USB hotplug detection. Outcome: No effect. 2) Replace media/burn a new CD at 8 x instead of 48x Outcome: No effect Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Turn on PC 2. Insert CD in drive. 3. Boot CD Actual Results: Press F2 for verbose option. All proceeds well until PCI and usb hotplugging attempts to start. Outcome: The boot process hangs at this stage. Expected Results: Bott should have proceeded normally to a full desktop. No information avaiable.
This is unrelated information perhaps, but the bug is not present in connectix virtual PC, (although Xfree does not work on this virtual machine program) so it may be specific to the Via/Gigabyte kt400A motherboard. As a precaution I unplugged all USB and unnecesary PCI devices. This had no effect either. Sorry for not including this information in my original report. Yours faithfully, Q
thank you for testing the experimental livecd, Have/could you try the "smp" kernel. it is 2.4.20 based. There is also a nohotplug option if you have not tried. ie: "gentoo nohotplug" or "smp nohotplug"
Very well. I disabled hotplug detection and the cd booted without too many problems, so hotplug does seem to be the source of your problems. However with hotplug disabled my Hercules radeon 9500 pro graphics card did not work. I am unsure if these issues are related, however if you feel I should submit this as a seperate report, I will be happy to do so. Ok, well I. sorry if I overwhelmed you somewhat with the amount of information I supplied. However I think I have uncovered the root of this problem. You see I have an 8x AGP enabled motherboard, and an 8x enabled AGP card (Radeon 9500 pro. Having spoken to of all people Lindows.com about this when I tried their live CD as a comparative test, they have stated the following. "The 2.4.20 Linux kernel doesn't support AGP 8x. AGP is a type of connection for video, and most video cards that you can buy in a store today are AGP. So, if you have a motherboard that supports AGP 8x, and you have a card that supports AGP 8x, like the ATI 9500, you will not be able to get any video in LindowsOS, or other Linux distros. We investigated this and found that often there is no bios option to select your AGP bus speed, the bios always does the maximum possible." I do not know if this is the case in this instance, but it at least sounds plausable. In any case, is anyone still monitoring this bug report? Things seem to have been quiet for quite a long time. Q
Has anyone tested whether AGP 8x works with the 2.6 kernels? I know a 2.6 LiveCD is a while off, but... if it does work, I imagine *someone* must be able to manage a kernel patch that enables support for AGP 8x, even if it only goes on the LiveCD? Although this is no more than a suggestion, I'm useless with the kernel, sorry.
