Description Rich Hart 2008-11-20 21:40:20 UTC
Hello All,
I've just installed workstation 6.5, and all went well, and runs accept the virtual network. I had no errors on the emerges, but the startup script errors on virtual network, and no device (/dev/vmnet0 in this case) is created. Am I doing something wrong in my install/setup? Or is this a different bug? I've done some googling and searching bugzilla/forums, but haven't found the answer.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
/etc/init.d/vmware start

Actual Results:
 /etc/init.d/vmware start
 * Starting VMware services:                                              [ ok ]
 *   Virtual machine monitor                                              [ ok ]
 * Virtual machine communication interface [ ok ]
 *   Blocking file system                                                 [ ok ]
 *   Virtual ethernet                                                     [ !! ]

I'll leave it at this level for now so I can help debug.

Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-21 10:21:33 UTC
Can you re-run "emerge --config vmware-workstation" as it mentions at the end of the build? This is is supposed to setup the networking back to default for you, and you should then be able to run the virtual network manager (as root) to configure the network as you want.

If running that has no effect, then we'll have to dig a little deeper, so please let us know whether it was successful or not...
Comment 3 Rich Hart 2008-11-21 13:41:37 UTC
That took care of it. I normally read the stuff at the end of a emerge. I guess I'm turning into a slacker noob :(
