fwiw, 0.8.0 fails the same way. Upstream appears to be alive if someone is interested.

Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-12-26 17:29:52 UTC
Mask removed, version bumped to 0.8.0, LDFLAGS respected, libdir properly set.

Subject: viewer 0.8.0 - configure should discover X11 libdir automatically

    Dear viewer developer,

as set out in Gentoo bug #247737 [1], viewer currently doesn't find the
X11 library directory on more modern installations, where the
deprecated /usr/X11R6 base dir isn't used any longer. While the Gentoo
patch I applied does not fix but only works around the problem of the
configure script figuring out by itself where that directory would be,
and I cannot therefore help you fix this problem in the viewer software
itself, this message is to let you know that the problem exists in
some form or another on some platforms.

Kind regards,
     Jeroen Roovers
     Gentoo developer
