Comment 1 Rene Meier 2008-11-18 17:01:25 UTC
i had a similar problem after the upgrade. this is not a bug. the driver does not use xorg.conf any more. you have to specify your configuration through hal. copy /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/11-x11-synaptics.fdi to /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ and modify it!

i use only scrolling on my touchpad and my file looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.touchpad">
      <match key="info.product" contains="Synaptics TouchPad">
        <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">synaptics</merge>
        <merge key="input.x11_options.VertEdgeScroll" type="string">1</merge>
        <merge key="input.x11_options.LeftEdge" type="string">0</merge>

This is a bug as no options are required with 0.15.x or manually configuring hal, all this has done is reversed what hal was originally designed to be. A full auto configuration tool of hardware.

This is the same hal config I have always used as well and scrolling is busted, It should not require any configuration options just to get basic scrolling avaliable.
Comment 4 Rene Meier 2008-11-19 07:46:05 UTC
for me its working fine. and for me hal has exactly done what it should do. my touchpad was configured automatically, although it was completly different from what i used to use. on my touchpad scrolling was enabled by default by moving with 2 finger tips.

0.99.2 has a few small bugfixes, would you mind seeing whether that clears it up for you?

It does not clear it up at all.
Comment 7 Alexey Parshin 2008-12-06 23:06:01 UTC
I agree. All the basic options such as tap to click and scrolling should be configured by default. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of hal.

It still doesn't work for me, too. I also tried to use config file provided in comment #1. IMHO, if the new version stops working, and there is no auto migration/configuration steps, the this is a regression.
Comment 9 Tony Vroon (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-06 23:17:52 UTC
This is turning into a generic discussion about what HAL should and should not do. I can not help you with that.
I must agree with Rene Meier's assessment of the situation, especially if you see no difference from 0.99.1 to 0.99.2

We package the software as it is provided upstream, they have changed their behaviour. You now need to specify the configuration differently, which you have not done. This is not a bug, and as such I am marking this report invalid.
