Description Onkel jot 2008-11-18 11:28:02 UTC
The ebuild for app-text/acroread-8.1.3 has a hard dependeny to xulrunner-bin on amd64. For x86, both dependencies are ORed:

<snip>
             !minimal? ( || ( net-libs/xulrunner
                         net-libs/xulrunner-bin
                         www-client/mozilla-firefox
                         www-client/seamonkey
                         www-client/seamonkey-bin ) ) )
</snip>

From my very limited experience i'd say this is also possible for amd64. I tried the xulrunner dependency ORed with xulrunner-bin as a local overlay, the xulrunner-bin dependency went away as expected, and acroread comes up without any problems.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. equery depends www-client/seamonkey-bin
2. equery depends www-client/xulrunner-bin
3.

Actual Results:
# equery depends www-client/xulrunner
[ Searching for packages depending on net-libs/xulrunner... ]
app-text/acroread-8.1.3 (x86 & !minimal? net-libs/xulrunner)

Expected Results:
# equery depends www-client/xulrunner
[ Searching for packages depending on net-libs/xulrunner... ]
app-text/acroread-8.1.3 (amd64 & !minimal? net-libs/xulrunner)
                        (x86&!minimal? net-libs/xulrunner)

I'm running unstable xulrunner-1.9 because of some quirks in combination with eclipse-sdk (Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede). The acroread ebuild does not depend on a specific xulrunner version.

This issue is related to Bug 235661, same xulrunner-bin dependency for net-www/netscape-flash. The bug has been marked a copy of Bug 234542, which it is not.

If you are on 64bit this is on purpose since acroread is 32bit it also needs a
32bit libgtkembedmoz.so in order to work as expected. And currently
seamonkey-bin and xulrunner-bin are the only -bin package which provide the 32bit version of
libgtkembedmoz.so on a 64bit platform.

If you don't want acroread to pull in xulrunner at all feel free to use the minimal USE flag. xulrunner is used to display the Adobe Reader Help for example. Previously the help was launched when you started acroread for the first time and you got a grey window without a "working" libgtkembedmoz.so but this has been changed upstream in more recent versions.
