I can reproduce the deprecation warnings here (with, say, sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.28_rc3): Nov 17 07:42:13 elmer [437609.472000] warning: process `hwsetup' used the deprecated sysctl system call with 1.23. Nov 17 07:42:57 elmer [437654.292000] warning: process `hwsetup' used the deprecated sysctl system call with 1.23. But with `hwsetup -v -n' I also get some nice output and no segfault: elmer ~ # hwsetup -v -n 2>&1 | tee hwsetup.out --- class: OTHER bus: PCI device: (null) driver: (null) desc: National Semiconductor Corporation 87560 Legacy I/O --- class: OTHER bus: USB device: (null) driver: (null) desc: Device 1d6b:0001 --- class: NETWORK bus: PCI device: eth0 driver: (null) desc: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 --- class: SCSI bus: PCI device: (null) driver: (null) desc: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53C896/897 --- class: SCSI bus: PCI device: (null) driver: (null) desc: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53C896/897 --- class: AUDIO bus: PCI device: (null) driver: snd_ad1889 desc: Analog Devices AD1889 sound chip --- class: CDROM bus: IDE device: hda driver: (null) desc: sf03 SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612S --- class: HD bus: SCSI device: sda driver: (null) desc: HP 18.2G ST318406LC --- class: HD bus: SCSI device: sdb driver: (null) desc: COMPAQ BB018135B5 --- class: KEYBOARD bus: KEYBOARD device: ttyS0 driver: (null) desc: Serial console (9600 baud) ttyS0 --- class: USB bus: PCI device: (null) driver: (null) desc: National Semiconductor Corporation USB Controller --- class: UNKNOWN bus: PCI device: (null) driver: (null) desc: National Semiconductor Corporation 87415/87560 IDE Could you run that manually on the same system to get more information on where it fails?
I get no ouput, just the segfault.
I steppted thru hwsetup.c with some printf() output and currently it seems to be a problem in "probeDevices" from libkudzu. I will try the latest version of libkudzu and report my results.
The problem occured while switching from kernl 2.6.23-gentoo-r3 to a later kernel. I could not figure out the problem exactly, but after rebuilding libkudzu and hwsetup the problem is gone.
