I checked the package for undefined reference and got undefined reference. For testing purposes LDFLAGS in /etc/make.conf was changed to LDFLAGS="${LDFLAGS} -Wl,-z,-defs -Wl,--no-undefined" The reported problem is in most cases a upstream problem - please report it upstream if it is so. Please use the man page to find the needed library. For example dlsym would need '-ldl' (libld.so) or cosf need '-lm' (libm.so). Do you have a link to a gentoo doc that would explain the problem with this ? It is easier to argue with upstream if there is such doc available.

Created attachment 196503 [details, diff] libxml2-2.7.3-r1.ebuild.diff Fixes the issue mentioned in #c1.
The entry about as-needed and no-undefined into diego's blog is very interesting and very clear. Well patch seems to be mostly correct.
Is this still an issue with dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.7 ?
(In reply to comment #5) > The entry about as-needed and no-undefined into diego's blog is very > interesting and very clear. > > Well patch seems to be mostly correct. > Maybe we could try to use it in next bump if possible (since upstream looks to not care). What do you think?

As talked with Gilles and Samuli on #gentoo-desktop, it builds fine with forced as-needed and gold linker, then, we will leave upstream to decide to fix this.
