Description Yixun Lan archtester gentoo-dev 2008-11-05 12:08:23 UTC
1. emerge -C vim-core, hang at "Unmerging app-editors/vim-core-7.0.174..."
2. "qlist vim-core"
 will list all the files, but in fact the files belong to vim-core-7.0.174 is already removed.
3. also when i "emerge vim-core" update to  app-editors/vim-core-7.2.021
it tell the merge files have collisions. and hang it there

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. i don't know how to re-produce
 this bug

Actual Results:
can't un-emerge vim-core package

Expected Results:
should un-emerge vim-core package gracefully

When it hangs, are there any subprocesses of emerge? You can use the output of `pstree` to see any subprocesses that may exist.

vim-core version and pstree info

1. output of emerge -pv vim-core, current version number
2. pstree before emerge -Cdv vim-core
3. pstree when un-emerging vim-core
Comment 4 Yixun Lan archtester gentoo-dev 2008-11-06 01:07:48 UTC
here I provide additional information,
the verbose output of emerge -Cdv vim-core, and the pstree info(seems not very useful)

I've noticed that the un-emerge process was not hang, but continue output following msg:
**************************
++ case "${ver_str:0:1}" in
++ result[$result_idx]=7
++ ver_str=7.0.109
++ result_idx=35
**************************

a. result_idx keep increasing)
b. notice ver_str is 7.0.109, while the output of "emerge -pv vim-core" is 7.0.174,
c. the "/var/build-gentoo" is the my PORTAGE_TMPDIR, which is a tmpfs FS, everything in this directory will vanish after reboot.if emerge looking something here, would be problem

how to trace this? I would like to spend some time debuging this problem

It seems to be an infinite loop in versionator.eclass, triggered by something that vim_pkg_postrm() does. Fixing the problem in the vim or versionator eclasses will not solve your problem locally, since the eclass code is cached inside /var/db/pkg/app-editors/vim-core-7.0.174/environment.bz2.

As a workaround, you can simply remove /var/db/pkg/app-editors/vim-core-7.0.174/vim-core-7.0.174.ebuild, which will cause the pkg_postrm() phase to be skipped entirely.

This bug crashed one of our Gentoo servers today. It could not satisfy client requests anymore. So the bug is probably not fixed (emerge --sync was done before).

As explained in comment #5, uninstallation loads old eclass code from /var/db/pkg/*/*/environment.bz2, so it's normal to experience this bug even though it is 'fixed'. Your experience depends on when the old version of vim-core was first installed.
