Description sa wu 2008-11-03 06:36:41 UTC
Sometimes when booting system just hangs and does not seem to do anything, apparently something with the serial ata drivers goes awry.
Happens regardless of hibernation or regular boot but not always. Power button and new boot fixes the issue after several tries, ranging from 1 to more than a dozen tries.
I have waited up to 30min to see if anything would happen but to no avail.
I don't really know where the problem lies and what outputs i should add.
Last lines seen on screen before hangup:

Happens on my samsung aura r70 deluis laptop. hard drive seems to be (according to dmesg):
ata1.00: ATA-8: WDC WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0, 11.01A11, max UDMA/133

I am currently using sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r7 on an amd64 no-multilib box.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot machine
2.
3.

Actual Results:
hangs when outputting line

ata_piix 0000:00:1f.2: MAP [P0 P2 IDE IDE]

Expected Results:
system running after some time

Does this happen with gentoo-sources 2.6.26 or 2.6.27?

The problem existed before, than dissapeared at git-sources-2.6.26-rc6, and now appeared back at gentoo-sources-2.6.27-rc4.

Sorry, wrong bug

Still got the same bug using sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r3.

Ok. Please try the last sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r4 and attach the output of smartcl -a /dev/?d?.
If the bug still remains, try adding irqpoll, noacpi and noapic at the end of the boot command line.
The dmesg output after a long intensive use would be great as well as a long SMART test. IMHO, this bug looks more like a disk controller dying. Did it appear after a kernel update ?
Comment 6 sa wu 2008-11-26 04:17:21 UTC
switched to sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r4 and at first glance (~30 reboots)
seems to fix the problem for me, will add some data after more runs.

smartctl output:

# smartctl -a /dev/sda
