I was originally using msn4lin to instant message with my msn messanger account, and switched to gaim. Using an msn messanger account, you have the option of changing your display name (know in gaim as your 'alias') at will, whenever you wish. While in my first session using gaim I change display name, and on my screen, when I typed, my display name showed up as the new changed name. I believe it had changed, and went on over the next few days to change it multiple other times. However I found (from the people I was chatting to) that my display name turned up on their screens as the last display name I had used in 'msn4lin'. This means that gaim is only changing the display name on my local computer, and the change isn't getting onto the web. I then switched back to msn4lin, and when I changed the display name there, the name change was seen by other people. I did try changing the alias in gaim, then shutting down gaim and restarting it. This still only changes the name locally. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set up gaim to use an msn messanger account, 2. After logging in, go into the tools menu, and go into accounts. 3. In accounts highlight the msn messanger account and click modify. There you should have a find a field called "alias" this is your name as displayed to others. If you change this, there should be a change seen by whoever you are talking to. NOTE: You will also find a field saying "screen name" this is the name you use to login, and is the front part of your email address, the "sever" is the '@----" part of your email address. This isn't what you want to change. Actual Results: I did the 3 steps, and changed my alias. This changed the name when I saw it in the instant message windows, but didn't change the display name for anyone was was instant messaging. Expected Results: It should have also changed for the people I was instant messanging, so they saw the new changed display name.
Assigning to bug-wranglers since this hasn't anything to do with docs.
I don't think this is a bug as much as it is a feature request. And if that is indeed the case I think your beef is with the Gaim team at http://gaim.sourceforge.net. There is really nothing we can do on the Gentoo side for this situation.
I'll go and talk to source forge then. Thanks a lot.
Closing this bug.
