gnome-base/gnome-2.24.0 requres many packages including libraries. For example it is the only package in my system requiring >=gnome-base/librsvg-2.22.3 (which unfortunatly is broken for me: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=554478). Could gnome dependencies be cleaned? The problem is that it requires libraries etc. For example dev-libs/glib is already pulled by x11-libs/gtk+ (also listed) which is required by most other packages listed. 1. As far as I remember it should be avoid 2. Why gnome requires newer library then any other subpackage despite it is only metapackage.
As you can see here [1], upstream GNOME releases contain a very precise list of packages with version numbers. The gnome-base/gnome meta ebuild is created to reflect this file. Basically we do this so that users (such as yourself :) ) get the "full GNOME experience" by using software versions that upstream considered essential as part of the stable release. Only on some very rare occasions do we not follow upstream's list, usually for mono bindings which need more man-power. But nothing forces you to keep our meta ebuild. If you want, you can copy it in a local overlay and modify it in any way you want (keep older versions, drop some packages you don't want, etc).
