Description Paul Hartman 2008-10-29 14:47:54 UTC
net-wireless/bluez-bluefw-1.0 fails to emerge. It cannot find kernel sources, even though they are there.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =net-wireless/bluez-bluefw-1.0
2.
3.

Comment 1 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-29 22:33:41 UTC
ebuilds for external kernel modules rely on the convention that '/usr/src/linux' is a symbolic link to the kernel source dir corresponding to your current kernel. Try creating this link:

cd /usr/src ; ln -s linux-2.6.27-gentoo-r1 linux

and then see how far you get.
Comment 2 Paul Hartman 2008-10-29 22:48:25 UTC
I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that /usr/src/linux does exist and has proper built kernel inside, and every other module/package has compiled fine while referencing this. Thanks.
Comment 3 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-30 01:11:13 UTC
How strange...

what happens if you cd into the working dir
/dev/shm/portage/net-wireless/bluez-bluefw-1.0/work/bluez-bluefw-1.0

and run the configure manually:
./configure --prefix=/usr --host=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --sbindir=/sbin --libdir=/usr/lib64
--build=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

Is /usr/src/linux still not found?
Comment 4 Paul Hartman 2008-10-30 01:27:53 UTC
yep, same exact error when I run it manually there.

Current kernel symlink:
  /usr/src/linux-2.6.27-gentoo-r1

I also tried changing the active kernel back to 2.6.26 and it has the same error. Must be something weird. Thanks.
Comment 5 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-30 04:53:01 UTC
Aha, I bet if you put it back to 2.6.25 it would compile -- the configure script is using presence of a specific file as a sanity check, and that file happens to be /usr/src/linux/include/pcmcia/version.h which appears to have gone away in recent versions. If you go back to 2.6.25, this is what include/pcmcia/version.h had to say:

/* version.h 1.94 2000/10/03 17:55:48 (David Hinds) */

/* This file will be removed, please don't include it */

So... it wasn't a good file for the configure script to pick.

Assigning to ebuild maintainers, who can patch the configure.in or perhaps commit a version bump (there are newer releases, so upstream may have fixed it by now).
Comment 6 Paul Hartman 2009-01-13 18:07:21 UTC
This version is almost 5 years old, and has not compiled since kernel 2.6.25 -- however I have come to the realization that BT_HCIBCM203X network driver module exists in the Linux kernel so this package is probably unnecessary in 2.6.x anyway.

Whether the user should be informed of this when trying to emerge this package, that's up to you. :) (assuming I'm not misunderstanding the purpose of this firmware)
Comment 7 David Davidson 2009-01-21 06:30:49 UTC
cmp bluez-bluefw-1.0/firmware/BCM2033-FW.bin bluez-firmware-1.2/broadcom/BCM2033-FW.bin
shows no differences

cmp bluez-bluefw-1.0/firmware/BCM2033-MD.hex bluez-firmware-1.2/broadcom/BCM2033-MD.hex
shows no differences

The only other things bluez-bluefw installed seems to be for hotplug. If one needs the firmware, net-wireless/bluez-firmware seems like the better choice.
Comment 8 Maxi Combina 2009-04-06 18:10:41 UTC
Exact same error here. I am using 2.6.28-gentoo-r4. The kernel is there, the link is also there.
I am stuck ... and I am upgrading gcc to 4.3.2-r3, and I am reemerging everything but this package is stopping me. Oh, and is marked as New, i.e, I don't have it emerge right now, some other package is pulling it

Just touch(ing) /usr/src/linux/include/pcmcia/version.h lets the package to install...
