Solar and I were x-compiling stuff when we found that the .pc
of this package was under /usr/share/pkgconfig instead of
/usr/$libdir/pkgconfig.

Why excatly do you claim /usr/share/pkgconfig is the wrong place for gtk-doc .pc file? I don't see anything architecture specific in it. Is the exec_prefix arch specific?
