Solar and I were x-compiling stuff when we found that the .pc
of this package was under /usr/share/pkgconfig instead of
/usr/$libdir/pkgconfig.

/usr/share/pkgconfig is the correct location for this .pc file.
Please refer to reasoning found in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10698 - reopen this bug here if this is a true problem for cross-compilation.
