what version of xfree and xft do you have ?

rocket individuals # xft-config --version
2.0.0
and XFree86 4.3.0

since you're using xfree-4.3.0 make sure you `emerge -C xft` ... 
 
ive updated the ebuild in cvs to fix this problem (needed -I/usr/include/freetype2 
in CFLAGS)
