Description Markus Goppelt 2008-10-23 23:07:08 UTC
Hi,
this is actually not a bug, it's more a question. I was wondering why the "nokia_dku2" kernel patch/module is not in the "app-mobilephone/gnokii-0.6.26-r2" and "app-mobilephone/gammu-1.20.0-r1" packages. Also: Why isn't the driver/module in "sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r7"? I'm using gnokii with a "dku2libusb" connection and gammu with a "dku2at" connection. With the "nokia_dku2" module is could use a "dku2" connection with both programs. I read "dku2" is faster and offers more features.

The "nokia_dku2" stuff in the latest gammu sources:
$ tar -tzf gammu-1.21.0.tar.gz | grep -i dku
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.6/
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.6/nokia_dku2.c
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.6/nokia_dku2.h
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.6/configure
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.6/Makefile.in
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.6/configure.in
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/howto.txt
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.4/
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.4/nokia_dku2.c
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.4/nokia_dku2.h
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.4/configure
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.4/Makefile.in
gammu-1.21.0/other/driver/dku2/kernel_2.4/configure.in

The "nokia_dku2" stuff in the latest gnokii sources:
$ tar -tzf gnokii-0.6.27.tar.gz | grep -i dku
gnokii-0.6.27/Docs/sample/45-nokiadku2.rules
gnokii-0.6.27/Docs/README-DKU2

gnokii-0.6.27/patches/kernel_2.4/nokia_dku2.h
gnokii-0.6.27/patches/kernel_2.6/nokia_dku2.c
gnokii-0.6.27/patches/kernel_2.6/nokia_dku2.h
gnokii-0.6.27/patches/kernel_2.6/nokia_dku2.c.2_6_15
gnokii-0.6.27/include/devices/dku2libusb.h

Markus

Hiya Markus, I'm afraid as you said, that's a question rather than a bug. Please either ask on the gentoo developer mailing list (gentoo-dev@gentoo.org, instructions at [1]), or ask your question on IRC (freenode servers, #gentoo-dev channel).

My guess would be that given there are other methods of communication that work, maintaining a kernel module would cause more problems than it would be worth (breakages as new kernels are released). Gnokii also specifically recommend using the libusb method[2].

I'm going to mark this as INVALID simply because it isn't a bug, but if you'd like to turn this into an enhancement request for the ebuilds to build these modules, please just reopen this bug and let us know... 5:)
