Description Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2008-10-23 07:39:45 UTC
I'm wondering why portage wants to rebuild the xorg-server even if I didn't enabled the removed USE-flags "intel" and "i810" :

[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r6 USE="dri ipv6 nptl xorg -3dfx -debug -dmx -kdrive -minimal -sdl -xprint" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev joystick keyboard mouse -acecad -aiptek -calcomp -citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -jamstudio -magellan -microtouch -mutouch -palmax -penmount -spaceorb -summa -synaptics -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vga -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -epson -fbdev -fglrx -glint -i128 -i740 (-impact) -imstt -intel% -mach64 -mga -neomagic (-newport) -nsc -nv -nvidia -r128 -rendition -s3 -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb (-sunbw2) (-suncg14) (-suncg3) (-suncg6) (-sunffb) (-sunleo) (-suntcx) -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vesa -via -vmware -voodoo (-i810%)" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] media-libs/mesa-6.5.2-r1 USE="nptl -debug -doc -motif -pic -xcb" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon -intel% -mach64 -mga -none -r128 -s3virge -savage -sis (-sunffb) -tdfx -trident -via (-i810%)" 0 kB

If you use --newuse, that's the expected behaviour. Did you use --newuse?
Comment 2 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2008-10-24 07:23:18 UTC
Oh yes, does this mean, that "--newuse" force a rebuild even if an USE flag was removed which wasn't previously set ?
Comment 3 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-25 10:13:58 UTC
It does, since that could mean that the option the flag turned off has now been permanently turned on (which would produce a different package when you recompiled). Basically, there's no way for portage to know whether it's a pointless rebuild or a useful one (without the ebuild saying so), so it chooses the safe option (since you explicitly asked for changes to USE flags to be rebuilt). I'm going to mark this as WONTFIX, but if you think it's really daft behaviour, reopen this and we'll assign it to the portage team. (If we do that though, they may still close it again saying they won't fix it, just so you're aware). Hope that's ok... 5:)

Ah, ok.

yes - I understand it :-)
