Version 2.3 is gallery is out, would be great to see in Portage;

I never really bothered how this works but does it also mean that a package for gallery 2.3 in the gentoo portage tree will be created? any idea when it will be available?

Ultra, it means that the package was added to the tree one week ago (ChangeLog in /usr/portage/www-apps/gallery/):

*gallery-2.3 (21 Oct 2008)

  21 Oct 2008; Peter Volkov <pva AT gentoo.org> metadata.xml,
  +gallery-2.3.ebuild:
  Version bump, bug #242712, thank Johny for report.

But since this is new package it'll stay in testing branch for some time (one month on more). If you really want to work with not stabilized packages, please, review the following section of handbook on how to mix stable and testing branches:
