init_mm symbol was marked as being scheduled for removal in 2.6.25, and now it is gone so ATI will need to release updated drivers to work with latest kernels.
They released a new version 8.10 recently, but Release notes do not mention this issue so you might need to wait a while longer for a fixed version.

Assigning to ebuild maintainers, who will be keeping closer track of this binary driver compatibility stuff.

OK - I remember a similar problem a couple of kernel versions before 2.6.27 (might have been 2.6.25 or so) - like this bug, amd64 was the only system affected.

I suggest either adding a block to ati-drivers when trying to install on 2.6.27 on an amd64 system or an error message (like on the aforesaid version).

Anyway, has been this bug reported to upstream?

I think you need to enable UNUSED_SYMBOLS in the Kernel Hacking section of your kernel config. I've fixed (I hope) the check for this in the ebuild.

Thanks, that did the trick for me :-)

What's so strange: I did the recommended way of upgrading the kernel:

cp .config to 2.6.27, make oldconfig, etc.. aah, I see, UNUSED_SYMBOLS wasn't needed in 2.6.26 :-)

I guess this bug can be changed to FIXED now.

I can confirm, just enable UNUSED_SYMBOLS solves the problem. Also this driver is stable and faster when used with 2.6.27 than 2.6.24

My results differ. I use gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r9, and fglrx was silently failing to load with a dmesg about init_mm not being found. An inspection of the kernel source shows that EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL is disabled by default. I enabled CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS, and fglrx loads now. It's dumping stack in __ke_spin_lock, but appears to be running OK. (If the dump appears to be a problem, I'll write a bug report.)
