I thought that the slotting of 4.1 mean't that it is completely independent of the kde3 install. So it doesn't matter if I am using 3.5.9 or 3.5.10. It just should not interact at all. Anyway the OP is using 3.5.10 so it is indepedent of the keywording of 3.5.9.
After some conversation on irc #gentoo-kde I learned the following. The Gentoo KDE 4.1 Guide states that one can install 3.5 alongside 4.1 without setting the new USE flag kdeprefix (which defaults to off). Major versions should work independently according to the Note in 3. Installation. But in reallity this is not the case at this moment. So clean 4.1 completely and re-install with kdeprefix set and the anoying plasma effects will be gone in 3.5. It worked fine for me.
