it fails to access iopl() to set the clock, and /dev/rtc doesnt exist under the 
UML.

I have attached a proposed work-around for this situation.

This bug prevents Gentoo from working correctly in a UML environment -- it hangs on bootup.  We have one ISP who is attempting to deploy Gentoo in just such an environment for his clients.  Upgrading the priority on this -- Az, could you see if we can get this committed before 1.4?

Fixed in CVS.  Will get new baselayout in the next few days.
