There is a new driver for the S3 savage video cards that is alot faster and supports DRI and video4linux. you can get it at http://www.linux.org.uk/~alan/S3.zip Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
We're already aware of it and are working on it now. Thanks!
An update: the driver only builds for xfree-4.2.0, and the DRI project (dri.sf.net) is working to update it for xfree-4.3.
What problem stops to include this as default savage driver?
As I said above, we're waiting for DRI to port the driver from 4.2 to 4.3. If you want more detail on the exact problems, search archives of dri-devel mailing list or join it and ask. If you care to contribute ebuild/patches that make it work on 4.2.0 or 4.2.1, I'd be willing to commit those now.
Hi! You can find the sources for the s3 savage driver with dri for Fedora here: ftp://people.redhat.com/alan/XFree86/VIA/ I'm trying to build it now, i'll post again if I succed.
Yeah I've seen it and been thinking about adding it. Mike Harris (Red Hat X maintainer) was gonna send the patch he used to get things up and running, since he's just adding it to their XFree86 too.
That driver isn't for savages, however, that's for the VIA CLE stuff.
If you look on: http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/S3Savage or more specifically http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/Download Then you can download latest binary snapshots now. I'm going to try it in the coming days -- if it's stable enough then would it be possible to add this to gentoo (maybe with a USE flag or something?).
I'm going to test the cvs driver from dri (savage-2-0-0-branch)..
Waiting til security issue gets fixed with DMA and it gets integrated into xorg upstream.
This has been done upstream.
Marking fixed.
