never seen that before; what version of texlive/pdftex are you using?

maybe related to:

could you please try with dev-tex/pdftex (and switch using eselect-pdftex), i've heard of problems with largefile support and the dev-tex/pdftex ebuild gives --disable-largefile at configure. And if it works better, adding --disable-largefile to texlive-core econf line.

That works very well.

Edit the ebuild, rebuild texlive-core-2008 and then try building gnuplot again?

yep; and dont forget to switch back to tl pdftex too

If that indeed fixes the problem I'll disable lfs support in this release too; it has been enabled by default upstream but caused problems on solaris and mac os i think; i didn't know it broke on linux too (probably specific to hppa though, but still should be disabled for everyone if this can cause such weird problems) :/
It is still possible that i'm smoking too much and that the problem lies somewhere else, but texlive's 2008 pdftex and dev-tex/pdftex should be almost the same, differences being the use of poppler instead of libxpdf and lfs support...

anyway, if dev-tex/pdftex works, it's not a gnuplot issue, reassigning to myself
Comment 9 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-15 19:24:48 UTC
Yes, rebuilding texlive-core-2008 with --disable-largefile does do the trick.
Comment 10 Alexis Ballier gentoo-dev 2008-10-16 09:38:58 UTC
thanks for testing; tl-core-2008-r1 has now largefile disabled
