Description Juergen Rose 2008-10-14 10:48:52 UTC
If I try to start gdm I can see a half second the start logo of nvidia driver, but then I get the message:
Failded to start the X server (...). It is likely that it is not set up correctly.
Would like to view the X server output ....

If I say Yes some output but no error is shown. Also the detailed X-server output shows only some Warnings (The EDID for IBM (DFP-0) contradics itself: mode "1600x1050" is specified in the EDID; however, the EDID's valid HorzizSync range (53.398-64.075 kHz) would exclude this mode's HorizSync (42.7 kHz); ignoring HorizSync check for mode "1680x1050".
...
No modes were requested; the default mode "nvidia-auto-select" will be used as the requested mode.
...
Validated modes: "nvidia-auto-select"
Virtual screen size determined to be 1680 x 1050
DPI set to (129, 127); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config
...

But no error is shown.

I have a minimal xorg.conf:
root@lynx:/root(12)# cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "true"
    Option "AutoEnableDevices" "true"
    Option "AllowEmptyInput" "true"
    Option "Xinerama" "0"
EndSection
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Any hint is very appreciated.
Juergen

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Juergen Rose 2008-10-14 10:57:02 UTC
Still some information:
If I do only "startx". I see a long time (ca. 30 s) a black (or blue) screen, but then X11 with twm is started.

If I mask nvidia-driver-177.80 and try to downgrade under Linux 2.6.27-gentoo to nvidia-drivers-173.14.12,
emerge fails with:

  x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -Wp,-MD,/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.12/work/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2/usr/src/nv/.nv.o.d -nostdinc -isystem /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.3.2/include -D__KERNEL__ -Iinclude -Iinclude2 -I/usr/src_lynx/linux-2.6.27-gentoo/include -I/usr/src_lynx/linux-2.6.27-gentoo/arch/x86/include -include include/linux/autoconf.h -I/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.12/work/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2/usr/src/nv -Wall -Wundef -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -Werror-implicit-function-declaration -Os -m64 -march=core2 -mno-red-zone -mcmodel=kernel -funit-at-a-time -maccumulate-outgoing-args -DCONFIG_AS_CFI=1 -DCONFIG_AS_CFI_SIGNAL_FRAME=1 -pipe -Wno-sign-compare -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables -mno-sse -mno-mmx -mno-sse2 -mno-3dnow -I/usr/src_lynx/linux-2.6.27-gentoo/include/asm-x86/mach-default -Iinclude/asm-x86/mach-default -fno-stack-protector -fomit-frame-pointer -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wno-pointer-sign -I/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.12/work/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2/usr/src/nv -Wall -Wimplicit -Wreturn-type -Wswitch -Wformat -Wchar-subscripts -Wparentheses -Wno-multichar -Werror -mcmodel=kernel -mno-red-zone -MD -Wno-cast-qual -Wno-error -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DNVRM -DNV_VERSION_STRING=\"173.14.12\" -UDEBUG -U_DEBUG -DNDEBUG -DMODULE -D"KBUILD_STR(s)=#s" -D"KBUILD_BASENAME=KBUILD_STR(nv)" -D"KBUILD_MODNAME=KBUILD_STR(nvidia)" -c -o /var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.12/work/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2/usr/src/nv/nv.o /var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.12/work/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2/usr/src/nv/nv.c

Indeed I don't have any asm/semaphore.h file. What I have is
/usr/src/linux-2.6.26-gentoo-r2/include/asm-x86/semaphore.h
but no
/usr/src/linux-2.6.27-gentoo/include/asm-x86/semaphore.h

Any idea?

Comment 3 Pat 2008-10-15 14:15:37 UTC
I can confirm that this file is missing (semaphore.h), in the 2.6.27-gentoo kernel.

I got stuck with this problem while I attempted to compile the vmware-modules:

Comment 4 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-15 17:22:35 UTC
Comment #2 and comment #3 appear to describe a different problem - please open a separate bug report for that issue. As for the original bug - it's probably a good idea to attach the /var/log/Xorg.#.log that X generated. Also, when root is able to run `startx' successfully but gdm (xdm) isn't, then this might be related to permissions to access /dev/dri/* device nodes - the Xorg.#.log should clear up that matter.
Comment 5 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-22 18:30:51 UTC
Juergen, it is normal that you need to run the very latest nvidia-drivers whenever a new kernel changes module APIs, so downgrading nvidia-drivers without downgrading the kernel is not a feasible solution (as you have discovered). To proceed further in debugging this, you need to attach the Xorg.0.log that Jer requested. I'm going to change the state of this bug to 'Need Info", please set it back to "Reopened" when you can attach such a logfile.
