Was merging gnome today and got an error saying gnome-themes failed during
./configure ... it couldn't find gtk-engines, gnome-themes doesn't depend on
gtk-engines and gtk-engines is masked, but as soon as i merged gtk-engines the
problem was solved.

it depends on which version of gnome-themes you're merging.

the one in ~x86 is currently in testing, that depends on gtk-engines which includes gtk-engines-{metal,crux,redmond95..} 

the one in x86 currently depends on the individual packages themselves and also has some patch to remove the gtk-engines-2 dependency. 

tell us which version you were having problems with.
