Description Zeryk 2008-10-13 22:35:59 UTC
AMD64 FAQ page is in conflict with HOWTO AMD64 page - This is confusing

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-amd64-faq.xml#multilib says:

Currently you cannot switch from a no-multilib to a multilib-enabled profile, so think over your decision twice before you use the no-multilib profile.

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_AMD_64#multilib_vs_no-multilib_profile says:

If you decided to use a no-multilib system and removed all multilib components from your system previously you can change back to a multilib system (e.g. you want to use wine or virtualbox now), even though the gentoo documentation says that you cannot switch from a no-multilib to a multilib-enabled profile (dunno who wrote that). Just follow these steps[...]

Then fix the wiki yourself, because that's wrong. Is it not obvious that it's a terrible hack?

CCing the AMD64 team just in case they want to review the FAQ that they themselves wrote, to see if anything's changed.

In the meantime, marking as INVALID.

AMD64, if you think the documentation needs to be updated, please reopen with procedures (not copied from the hackish wiki article; there are license issues.)

The FAQ says it's not possible exactly because of that, we don't recommend some ugly hacks to users. If they want to break their system they can do it on their own.

Thanks for confirming, angelos. I'll leave the bug and the FAQ as-is.
