sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 does not power off when /sbin/poweroff invoked. sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r1 does and is ran on the same hardware with equivalent .config files. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.boot system into 2.6.26-gentoo-r2 2.login as root 3.run /sbin/poweroff Actual Results: system turns off drives and halts. Expected Results: system should completely poweroff Portage 2.2_rc12 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0, gcc-4.3.2, glibc-2.8_p20080602-r0, 2.6.26-gentoo-r2 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.26-gentoo-r2-x86_64-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Quad_CPU_Q6600_@_2.40GHz-with-glibc2.2.5 Timestamp of tree: Sat, 11 Oct 2008 15:35:01 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p33 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r14, 2.5.2-r7 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.61-r2 sys-devel/automake: 1.10.1-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.26 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--load-average=20 --jobs=16" FEATURES="distlocks parallel-fetch preserve-libs protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" MAKEOPTS="-j9" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X a52 aac aalib acl acpi alsa amd64 bash-completion berkdb bidi branding bzip2 cdinstall cdparanoia cdr cli cracklib crypt cups cupsddk dbus dgs directfb divx doc dri dts dvd dvdr encode exif fbcon flac foomaticdb fortran ftp gd gdbm gif glitz gmedia gpm gtk hal iconv ipv6 isdnlog jadetex java javascript jpeg jpeg2k lcms live midi mmx mng mp3 mpeg mplayer mplayer-bin mudflap multilib musepack ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin nvidia openal opengl openmp pam parport pcre perl png posix ppds pppd python qt3 qt4 quicktime readline realmedia reflection replytolist sdl session sharedmem sockets spell spl sse sse2 sse3 ssl ssse3 startup-notification svg svgs sysfs tcpd theora threads tiff tk truetype unicode vim-syntax vorbis wifi wmb wmp x264 xcomposite xforms xml xorg xpm xprint xscreensaver xv xvid zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

Do any messages appear in dmesg after you run poweroff?
(In reply to comment #4) > Do any messages appear in dmesg after you run poweroff? > I don't see anything, and I did some tests (recording only the shutdown procedure via /var/log/messages) and with the exception of the timestamps they look identical to me.
Created attachment 168354 [details] kernel configuration file for gentoo-sources-2.6.27 /sbin/poweroff works with this kernel (2.6.27-gentoo)
This is likely a regression in the acpi code in the -r2 revision that was fixed through 2.6.27
Fixed in 2.6.27, released in gentoo-sources-2.6.27.
