I've created a new mirror for portage tree (rsync ftp.loginet.ro::gentoo-portage/) and for source (ftp://ftp.loginet.ro/pub/gentoo) because there is no Romanian official mirror of gentoo distribution. The link of this machine is a 100Mbit FDDI but is limited to 256Kbit on international trafic. Nevertheless, on Romanian area it has the full power of it's 100Mbit. I've taked the liberty of omitting some directories (experimental, old releases, ...) given the fact that my HDD has 30Gb and now it has only 4Gb free. I think that it is best to leave some space for future packages rather than to have the whole mirror.
For the rsync side, I've added 217.156.27.2 to the access list for rsync1.us.gentoo.org. Please update your rsync cron jobs to point to rsync1.us.gentoo.org and post back here when you've done so. We'll monitor the server for a couple days to make sure things are working fine. I'll have someone send information regarding the source mirror. Thanks.
Done. All cron jobs are working fine. I resynchronize portage tree once every 30 minutes (now is set to use rsync1.us.gentoo.org server) and distfiles once at every 4 hours using rsync server on www.ibiblio.org.
Just to give you an update... the rsync mirror is ready to be added. You'll be the first Romanian mirror. Currently, our mirror admin that can add new domains is on vacation. As soon as he's able, we'll get the rsync mirror online. Thanks.
The rsync side should now be complete. The server is available as rsync1.ro.gentoo.org and via rsync.ro.gentoo.org. If you could update the motd file to mention that it is rsync1.ro, that would helpful. I think there are still some delays on the source mirror side, but hopefully within the next week or so, you'll get some more info about that. Thanks for supporting Gentoo.
Done. You could put my rsync server in "Mirrors" page. Don't mind if Romanians choose to use my mirror directly. Same thing is valid for source mirror. Seeya, Alin
I forgot to mention that I've subscribed <mrness@loginet.ro> to our gentoo-mirrors mailing list (low volume). The list is used to discuss mirror-related issues. As for the mirror listing, I don't think there is a listing of rsync mirrors.
I was reffering to http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml
It seems that I get a German mirror answering to my portage sync request when using rsync.gentoo.org. I have a list of Romanian IP classes, if it helps you guys to make a more localized DNS replies. In fact, this list is updated at every hour from my BGP server. I could give you an URL from where you could update the list.
> It seems that I get a German mirror answering to my portage sync request when > using rsync.gentoo.org. rsync.gentoo.org works on major areas, for example, North America, Europe, Asia, etc. Since your mirror is effectively only available to Romania, I didn't add it to the europe and main rotations. The best way to access it is via rsync.ro.gentoo.org, or directly through rsync1.ro.gentoo.org As for more localized replies, we aren't expecting our DNS provider to be more granular than continent. Thanks for the offer though. The source mirror doesn't appear to be syncing. If you are still interested in providing a source mirror, I can send you some instructions on accessing the private distfiles mirror. instructions.
I had some problem with synchronizing (sometimes it tooks 2 days until source sync is completed). Additionally, I've found a bunch of unofficial source mirrors in Romania (e.g. ftp://ftp.roedu.net) so I have dismissed my source mirror. Anyway, my source mirror wasn't an official mirror, so I think there is no problem with that, right?
No problems at all. Had the mirror sync'd OK, we would have made it an official Romanian mirror. Thanks again for the rsync mirror.
