Description Evildad 2008-10-08 14:06:32 UTC
Hi,

today I wanted to downgrade my running OpenVZ Server from the unstable 2.6.24.005.1 to stable 2.6.18.028.056.1.
The Problem is that my sata controller wasn't detected within the the 2.6.18.X OpenVZ Kernel.
On the 2.6.24.X kernel series there is no problem with the controller.
I tried to compile EVERY available controller into the Kernel but it just didn't work out.
Now I'm stuck with the 2.6.24.X kernel series.

Is there a chance to get the old kernel running since I'm experiencing some kernel oops in the newer one.

Reproducible: Always

Well, there are three flavors of openvz kernels in the tree currently:
1. Based on vanilla kernel
http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/2.6.18
2. Based on vanilla kernel + RHEL5 patchset
http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/rhel5
3. Development openvz kernel
http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/2.6.24

1 is stable.
2. is unstable
and 3 is hardmasked.

Note: number 3 is hardmasked so it's for those who really need 2.6.24 kernel and is not afraid of development kernels...

The difference between 1. and 2. is that RHEL developers backport drivers for new hardware. So 2. supports more hardware then 1 and 2 is what you need. Try 2.6.18.028.057.2 kernel - it should support your driver.

But don't forgive to read notice at the end of kernel install. It's not a trivial task to build it so take kernel config file from upstream and then disable what you don't need there...

Resolving as upstream as it's their work to release new kernel finally which will support all new hardware without this crappy RHEL patches.
